I spent over twenty years as a dentist and hadn’t given any thought as to how effective toothpastes were. My patients were mostly healthy, doing a pretty good job, and seemed to have few problems. Anyway there was no alternative. But when I left clinical dentistry and went into aged care I got a real shock.

I had never seen such appalling dental neglect and inadequate oral hygiene. At first, I blamed the nurses, but then I realised it wasn’t their fault. They had nothing that was any good. No one had ever provided a solution. Anyway how could you possibly manage the oral care of those with such oral neglect, serious medical conditions, and other problems like dementia and swallowing problems.

Over the past twenty years, I have realised there are many millions of people who find toothpastes and mouthwashes do not meet their needs. Here is a very short list: problem mouths, crooked teeth, no access to dental care, medication dry mouth, Sjogrens (xerostomia), cancer therapy, auto immune, head injured, disability, psychiatric, rehabilitation, and aged care. The list goes on and on. Their needs are very different to our usual dental patients. Initially I invented Denta-Med gel for those in aged care, but it turns out many other people have the same requirements to address their oral health problems.

• Denta-Med gel is a whole mouth product. Everybody has got a mouth. Medical research has shown harmful bacteria live in the mouth, even when teeth are not present. They can cause serious medical conditions. They say ‘the mouth is a mirror of the body. If the mouth is healthy, it is an indicator of good general health. So even if you have not got teeth, the mouth should always be kept clean and healthy. The use of an anti-bacterial toothpaste helps you keep it that way.
• Denta-Med gel has no abrasives. The primary purpose of toothpastes is to remove food stains and deliver fluoride. But in removing food stains, the abrasives also temporarily remove the tooth’s protection formed from the saliva. Because it has no abrasive, Denta-Med gel does not remove that coating retaining it to further protect the teeth with its active ingredients. For those with dry mouth, the gel moistens the soft tissues and prevents further dehydration.
• Micro particle chitosan, used for the first time in an oral care product, delivers two critical functions. In addition to accelerated healing, it provides a slow release system for the anti-bacterials, zinc, and fluoride.
• Denta-Med gel is more effective than toothpaste. An independent clinical study at the Perth Dental School in 1989 on people with very good oral hygiene showed Denta-Med gel was more effective in reducing plaque and improving gum health. In another two week study of an improved version of Denta-Med gel at the Adelaide Dental School in 1995 showed on a small group with virtually no oral hygiene was found to reduce plaque by 61% and improve gum health by 40%.

Denta-Med gel does not replace toothpastes. They’re a team. Toothpastes can still be used in the morning, and Denta-Med gel can be used at night. After using Denta-Med gel at night you will wake up in the morning with a clean, comfortable and most importantly, a healthy mouth.
